Abstract

Assuming Kant's analysis of the judgment of taste to be a reasonably plausible account of how people can communicate individual feelings with each other,my task in this paper is to extend this account into the realm of aesthetic reflection upon community practices, traditions and beliefs as they manifest themselves in particular cases. Like the judgment of taste, aesthetic reflective cultural judgments will be expressions, in the words of Revueltas, of “singular experiences that have the pretension or hope of being universally shared. ” Their claims on the agreement of others should carry as much weight, therefore, as judgments about the beauty of nature.
